353. Wadhwani Institute for Artificial Intelligence, Mumbai, India

Wadhwani Institute for Artificial Intelligence (Wadhwani AI) is an independent, nonprofit applied research institute and global hub developing AI solutions for social good. Our mission is to apply the power of artificial intelligence to solve the world’s toughest problems in domains such as health, agriculture, financial inclusion, education, and smart cities. Our team consists of world-renowned scientists, innovators, and entrepreneurs from Microsoft, Stanford, Yale, Cornell, and IITs. In addition to our in-house capabilities, we work closely with partners – nonprofits, governments, academic and research institutes - to identify problems AI can help solve, build datasets, develop and test solutions, iterate, and scale. We have chosen MNCH (maternal, newborn, and child health), TB (tuberculosis), and cotton farming as our first focus areas.

Summer Project

Within health, we primarily work in the areas of tuberculosis, maternal and child health, and are broadly interested in AI-powered universal healthcare. Intern projects are likely to be within these areas. We have two broad project areas:

  1. AI / ML, data science, and engineering
  2. Programs & partnerships

1. AI / ML, data science, and engineering

  • Literature review
  • Develop AI algorithms
  • Develop prototypes

2. Programs & partnerships

  • Conduct primary and secondary research
  • Contribute to landscape studies on problems and innovations
  • Identify relevant datasets
  • Perform analysis
  • Prepare reports

We are looking for interns who are passionate about helping build solutions for global health using the latest advances in AI.

For the AI / ML, data science, and engineering internship, the intern should have completed coursework in Probability, Linear Algebra, Calculus, and must have Python programming experience, hands-on experience with data science toolkits, and preferably also have some exposure to Machine Learning.

For the programs & partnerships internship, the intern should have strong problem solving and analytical skills and excellent written and verbal communication. Prior experience in technology-based healthcare innovation / global health is a strong plus.

Work Environment

We have been hosting 10-15 interns each summer for the past three years, a mix of AI/ML research interns and ICT / human-centered design interns. We expect to have around 15 interns in summer 2021 as well, many of whom would be working virtually.

On a scale of 0 to 5, the level of internship supervision from very little (0) to a great deal (5) will be a 2.5. We anticipate (formally) interacting with the intern twice a week at a minimum.
