This summer, Haakon is interning with Emergency First Aid Responder System (EFAR), an organization that helps rural communities establish and augment their own emergency medical services in Cape Town. EFAR enables local professionals, trained in basic life support, to respond to calls in minutes in their own communities and provide care until transport arrives, or provide transport if ambulances never come. EFAR provides structure, system, and training tailored to each community and secures continuing support for these systems through the South African government. Haakon is spending this summer helping communities write proposals to the South African government and implement the EFAR system.
