This summer, I am interning in the Elderly health and Disability Unit at Greater Boston Legal Services. As part of the unit, I am working with clients who have lost their Mass Health eligibility or who are being charged higher prices for their insurance because of changes in income. I am also working with clients to prove disability in order to receive benefits from Social Security. As an intern, I request medical records and create chronologies of client's medical history. On any given day, I am directly interacting with clients and government agencies; I conduct client intakes, call Social Security and hospitals to request information, and translate conversations with clients who speak Arabic. I am also involved in advocacy work, such as researching and contacting homeless shelters for one of our clients. The team has been incredibly welcoming and I have learned so much thus far.
